Bernhard Duss - Textile designer

A passion for fabric and a curiosity to explore new possibilities through materials, colours, and patterns lie at the very core of creativity.

Bernhard Duss is an internationally renowned textile and costume designer, scenographer and curator. He has been working at Christian Fischbacher since 2020 and particularly appreciates the combination of tradition and innovation. Fischbacher has written design history for the bed. At the end of the 1970s, the St. Gallen based textile company was one of the first to successfully launch colourful printed bed linen collections on the market. Bernhard Duss is committed to continuing and enriching this tradition and its innovative drive. His ambition and incentive: to keep setting pioneering trends. In addition to his professional commitment to Christian Fischbacher, he is constantly working on new projects as a freelance designer, scenographer and costume designer.

Finding inspiration to create the trends of tomorrow

A chocolate wrapper can be just as inspiring as historical artwork, a new building or a blooming garden. It often has to do with our own awareness of what is in the air or what we are (not) interested in. I believe in staying curious — in looking at many things, and everything in between. Of course, this also includes observing the interior design scene. Fashion, art and current topics also provide inspiration. I'm careful with the word trend. For me, it's primarily about seducing customers with new and irresistible patterns. The challenge lies in developing something new. It often starts with a feeling that is defined by doing and from which something bigger can develop.

The perfect bedroom

The bedroom is a place of retreat and absolutely private. As the name suggests, the focus is on sleeping. Accordingly, the protagonist in the perfect bedroom is the bed. The walls, floor and ceiling are ideally kept in muted colours. The only decoration is the bed linen. It can be colourful and patterned or white and neutral - depending on your mood.

Bernhard Duss about...

Quality of sleep
99.9 percent very good and deep, obviously in Christian Fischbacher bed linen.
My bedtime reading
I never read in bed because I hardly manage more than half a page before I fall asleep.
Alternative sleeping spots
Sleeping on straw as a child. However, even then I knew that sleeping conventionally in a bedroom was more my thing.
Sleeping tips
Very simple: lie down, cover up, switch off the light, close your eyes and sleep.

My favorite Design

The TREES design from the current 2025 collection is like sleeping in an orchard, surrounded by freshly sprouting and calming greenery.
